Story Catchers

Fr. Chris Ponnet, Pastor, Chaplain

We as chaplains daily come together for interfaith reflection based on our own stories and the stories of those whom we serve as “story catchers.” May this season of hope and light we now enter, allow us all to pause and reflect as “story catchers” on the struggles and joys of our lives.

St Camillus Center is about healing and accompanying. In 2013 we will have provided over 23,000 hours and 90,000 bedside visits at LAC +USC Medical Center and Keck/Norris Hospitals with a budget of just over $500K directed toward Spiritual Care. We continue to train 18 chaplain interns at LAC+USC Medical Center including this year students serving at Homeboys Inc, Glendale Adventist and California Hospitals. Over 80% of our budget goes to our direct chaplains and training of chaplains. Over 60% of our budget comes from our partnership with Together In Mission and UNIHEALTH being our major foundation partners along other foundations and our over 3,000 Friends of St Camillus partners.

Our outreach continues to include Angel Interfaith Network, Catholic Ministry with Gay and Lesbian Persons (formerly MLGC), Pax Christi So Cal/LA Chapters and new groups this year including Catholics Against the Death Penalty LA and the St Camillus Associates Community. Spiritual Care Week 2013 invited us to reflect on the call to be “prophetic voices” and we take seriously that call especially as the USA takes up Comprehensive Immigration Reform and enrolls the hope of most of our people in the Affordable Health Care Act.

We join the whole world in the words and example that Pope Francis continues to give to us. In 2014 St Camillus Center celebrates its 60th anniversary and we hope you will join us in celebrating our present and past service and consider joining our efforts in our community to “accompany with hope” as a monthly or annual donor, daily prayer advocate or as a volunteer. Blessings!
